Rome and the Castelli Romani

A naturalistic, historical, artistic, religious and gastronomic itinerary among the most interesting, mysterious and mythological areas in Italy.

The importance of the whole area of the “Castelli Romani” is due to its valuable landscapes, its history, its culture, and its nature – all unique in Italy. Our aim is to honour and promote all the resources the “Roman Castles area” has to offer to the many foreign and Italian visitors who arrive in these magical places, day after day.

The fauna of the Roman Castles is still very rich and extremely interesting. Among the many mammals living in the area are present the fox, porcupine, hedgehog and squirrel. On the fertile soils of the Alban Hills, grow rigorous vegetation, and it has been studied by botanists for a long period of time. The woodlands are predominantly made up of oak, holm-oak, beech and other species. The most striking of those planted by man are the pine and chestnut. The flowers include the cyclamen, anemone, narcissus poeticus, wild orchid and pond lily.

The Alban hills are an impressive volcano in central Italy, located between the calcareous reliefs of the Apeninnines ( Pranestine and Lepini mountains) and Tyrrhenian coast.
Immediately to the north is the city of Rome, which owes part its history, or at least part of its architecture, to the volcanic nature of the area.
In this area are located 16 typical villages called "Castelli Romani"(Albano, Ariccia, Castelgandolfo, Colonna, Frascati, Genzano di Roma, Grottaferrata, Lanuvio, Marino, Montecompatri, Monteporzio Catone, Nemi, Rocca di Papa, Rocca Priora, Lariano, Velletri)offering visitors the chance to appreciate the ancient and fascinating history, with important traces dating from centuries before the birth of Rome.
When modern-day Romans visit the Castelli Romani, it is above all for the fresh air, the views, and the excellent cuisine united with famous DOC wines like Frascati, Marino, Colli Albani, Colli Lanuvini, Montecompatri and Velletri.
Among the most visited areas are the lakes of Albano (the mythical Albalonga), and lake of Nemi (The sacred grove of Diana and Rex Nemorensis), the beauty of Castel Gandolfo (Pope's summer vacation since centuries), and Nemi with the ruins of Diana's Temple. Highly coveted is also Frascati with its archeological site at the Tuscolo, its amazing Villas, Palaces, Churchs and Museums.

It's also possible to take a numerous guided tours. The work conducted by the park has fostered the return of animals that had forsaken the territory, including the badger, marten, peregrine falcon, spectacled salamander and many species of bats. The enhancement of biodiversity has supported the return of these mountains of a timid species like the wolf. Our company  organizes guided tours, seasonal programs that allow you to better appreciate the area of Roma Castles.
